Jan Ayton

Sketchbook
‘One summer in the nineties I walked 15 miles to Ely Cathedral along the river towpath. I wanted to make an ancient journey and was interested in the images this provoked, predominantly of the flat intensely fertile landscape which had been a barren swamp three centuries before. The sense of wildness made me think of the upheavals this land has seen – of Cromwell and revolution, of witches terror and heretical ideas that thrived in the Fens where civilization was remote.’ – Jan Ayton
